Xcel Energy has proposed a 21% rate increase that, if accepted by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), will raise the utility bills of its Minnesotan customers by an additional $12 to $20 each month. By burdening its customers with even larger utility bills, Xcel Energy will rake in hundreds of millions of additional dollars, despite already experiencing an 8.4% profit growth in 2021.  We should not have to struggle to pay our utility bills just so Xcel Energy executives can make a larger profit. Trash from all over Hennepin County is shipped to North Minneapolis to be burned at the Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC), the waste-to-energy plant located next to Target Field. Our community is disproportionately burdened by the damaging air pollution produced by the HERC. However, simply shutting down the HERC would divert the trash it processes to landfills or other incinerators, potentially endangering other communities. The best way to protect ourselves from harmful waste disposal practices is to get rid of the waste all together. Hennepin County is currently formulating a Zero Waste Plan with the goal of keeping over 90% of waste out of landfills and incinerators. Along with supporting and participating in these zero waste efforts, we must demand that the closure of the HERC be part of the county's plan.
